Future trends: egg and sperm banks

The World Egg Bank has just published (August 2021) an industry report looking at how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected egg and sperm banks over the last 12 – 16 months. It explores three key issues: (1) what does the near-term hold for intended parents seeking donor eggs or sperm? (2) how have health and economic trends during the Covid-19 pandemic affected egg and sperm bank services? (3) how can intended parents and healthcare providers navigate the ongoing uncertainty and potential disruption caused by Covid-19 in the coming months?

IVF rights in France to be extended to single women and lesbian couples

This week (29 June 2021), the French parliament passed a bill which will give single women and lesbian couples the right to access fertility treatment in France. Up until now, restrictive laws have meant that only heterosexual couples have been eligible to undergo fertility treatment, such as IVF, in France. This left single women and lesbian couples having to travel abroad for fertility treatment. As such, this new legislation means that for the first time in France all women under 43 will be able to access fertility treatment regardless of sexual orientation or relationship status.

Legal aspects of known donor arrangements

There are a wide range of reasons why people to choose to become a known donor or conceive a child through known donation. Friendship, altruism, biological legacy, family narrative, personal situations and previous experiences can be important factors. A known donor arrangement creates a number of complex legal issues, implications and outcomes depending on the method of conception and wider circumstances.

Egg Donation in the UK, Belgium and Spain

Louisa Ghevaert was delighted to attend the expert stakeholder meeting led by De Montfort University, Leicester, on egg donation in the UK, Belgium and Spain ('EDNA') on 11 February 2020. This study explores the social, political, economic and moral issues, implications and outcomes associated with egg donation in the UK, Belgium and Spain to help improve understanding and help shape future egg donation policy and practice.
